Diagnosis and Treatment of Moles, Birthmarks and Blemishes

A variety of birthmarks are notable in the nursery of the newborn child and many others accumulate on the skin throughout life. So-called benign nevi appear with age, in a genetically determined fashion that dictates age of onset, location, and size and shape of the lesion.

Moles that are present at birth have a special risk of possible dysplasia or abnormality developing in them and warrant observation if not removal. Other nevi which accumulate throughout life are generally benign, but may manifest features of dysplasia or abnormal cell growth, or be prone to irritation depending upon the location of the lesion.

In general, moles that are bigger than the size of a pencil eraser, have irregular or jagged margins, and uneven pigmentation within the mole, warrant evaluation by a dermatologist. The vast majority of moles or nevi do not require removal. Those prone to irritation, or certain lesions which evidence change concerning for abnormality or possibly melanoma should be evaluated by a dermatologist and removed in the appropriate fashion. Many patients seek removal of nevi for cosmetic reasons as well.
