Chemical Peel Treatments

The idea of controlling and shedding damaged skin cells with an acidic solution to expose a fresh new layer of younger, healthier looking skin has existed for over a hundred years. Today, the procedure is safer, more precise and highly effective. In fact, a chemical peel can help return your skin to a more youthful texture and appearance in a series of treatments.

What’s It For?

A chemical peel is a non-surgical alternative to improve a variety of skin conditions and can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs to improve or reduce:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Shallow acne scars
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Age spots
  • Freckling

How Does It Work?

Based on your skin type and desired results, the provider will recommend a superficial, medium, or deep chemical peel. When you’re ready, the provider will select the proper chemical or mix of chemicals and apply the solution to the skin. The chemical produces a separation and peeling of the outer layers of the skin to stimulate the production of new skin from beneath.

What Does It Feel Like?

Most patients experience a warm or hot sensation lasting up to ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. For deeper peels, some patients require light sedation.

Recovery depends on the type of peel. Generally, the deeper the peel, the longer the recovery. Glycolic peels are often selected as a first time peel and while there will be some peeling of the skin, they require no healing period at all. For moderate depth peels, the healing process can be five to seven days. Stronger, more aggressive peels, such as a TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel, are preferred when deeper hyperpigmentation is present. Deep phenol peels may be used when wrinkle softening is desired. Healing periods for TCA and phenol peels can range from seven to ten days. Your actual healing period may be shorter or longer depending on the type of peel performed.

In addition to chemical peels, alternative treatments to correct or rejuvenate your skin include laser resurfacing, pigmentation bleaching creams, microdermabrasion, photorejuvenation, collagen injections, and more.
